What Henry VIII and His Six Wives Is About
In 1547, on his deathbed, King Henry VIII looks back over his six marriages. The narrative treats the divorces, the excommunications, the separations and the executions not as a monarch’s personal story but as what the arithmetic of keeping a dynasty alive does to people; of his three children only one was the male heir he wanted. Waris Hussein directed, adapting the BBC’s 1970 six-part series The Six Wives of Henry VIII, with Keith Michell, who had played Henry in the series, in the part; he had won a number of awards for it, a BAFTA among them. The women are played by Frances Cuka, Charlotte Rampling, Jane Asher, Jenny Bos, Lynne Frederick and Barbara Leigh-Hunt. Donald Pleasence plays Thomas Cromwell and Bernard Hepton Archbishop Cranmer. It opened on 13 July 1972.
