What Melody Is About
Daniel and Melody attend the same primary school in London. Daniel falls in love with her and one day decides: they will marry. Not sometime, but now. They tell their parents, their teachers and the headmaster. Nobody takes it seriously; they are mocked, punished, and blocked. Daniel's friend Ornshaw is against it at first but in the end stands with them, and the children at the school start a revolt. Alan Parker wrote the screenplay for Waris Hussein's film; it was Parker's first. The producer David Puttnam brought Bee Gees songs to the film and the music became the narrative's main carrier. The film did not succeed at the box office in Britain or America. It was, however, a large success in Japan, where its soundtrack reached number one, and drew the same interest in Argentina and Chile. Who it's for: Viewers who like 1970s British cinema, films told from a child's point of view, and the music of the Bee Gees. Who it's not for: The narrative is thin and the adult characters are entirely caricatures. The resolution at the end is also not realistic.
