What Hercules Returns Is About
Brad, sacked from his job, decides to reopen an old cinema that had closed down, and brings his friends in with him. For the opening they choose the last film the place showed before it shut. When the curtain goes up a problem appears: there is no English print, the film is in Italian, and the house is full. The three friends start dubbing it live. David Parker's Australian comedy came out of the stage act of a group called Double Take; Des Mangan and his team dubbed old films live with invented dialogue. The film on the screen is an Italian adventure picture from 1964. The joke is entirely in the dubbing: the image stays the same, the meaning is rewritten from scratch. It runs eighty-two minutes.
