What Herstory Is About

The film is about the case Korean women brought in Japan over the sexual slavery the Japanese military forced them into during the war. Ten plaintiffs and thirteen lawyers faced the Japanese state across more than twenty three hearings between 1992 and 1998, with a support association formed in Fukuoka standing behind them. Known in Korea as the Kwanbu trial, the case became one of the first of its kind to obtain any result at all, however partial. Min Kyu-dong’s hundred and twenty one minute South Korean film begins when the businesswoman who organises the case learns what a friend of hers lived through, and it presents the courtroom as labour rather than as a stage. Kim Hee-ae and Kim Hae-sook star, and it opened on 27 June 2018.
