Thomas and Luc have not spoken in years, in part because Thomas could never make peace with his brother being gay. When Thomas is diagnosed with a blood disorder that is hard to treat and impossible to cure, Luc is the person he calls. Patrice Chéreau, adapting Philippe Besson's 2001 novel, refuses to let the illness stand in for anything: the camera stays in the hospital room, on the shaved body, in the hours of waiting, and no recovery is ever promised. As the brothers close the distance, the people around them are pushed outside it, and the film counts that cost too. Chéreau won the Silver Bear for direction at Berlin in 2003.
