His Three Daughters

A film about three sisters shut in an apartment during their father's last days. The father is in a New York apartment, in home hospice care. All three daughters come. Katie is the eldest, trying to impose order and criticising everyone. Rachel has lived in the same flat as their father for years, places bets and avoids talking. Christina has come from far away and tries to soothe everyone. The film takes place almost entirely in that apartment. The father is barely seen; the narrative consists of three women talking in the kitchen, the corridor and on the balcony. The subject is not death but who has carried how much. The one who has been caring for years and the one who could not find time to call stand in the same room, and the reckoning is never demanded openly, but it is under every sentence. Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne and Elizabeth Olsen play the sisters. Azazel Jacobs directed. After a festival run it was released on a streaming service. The text is built like a play and the film's strength lies largely in the performances. A well-written film for anyone who likes family drama and confined-space storytelling. For a viewer expecting incident, the narrative is entirely conversation and never leaves the flat.
