What Hit So Hard Is About
P. David Ebersole’s documentary is about Patty Schemel, the drummer of Hole. Schemel was handed a Hi-8 camera just before the band’s Live Through This tour and filmed that period from the inside with a closeness nobody had seen, and those tapes are the spine of the film. What it covers is not only the music scene of the nineties: sudden fame, the cost of addiction, being homeless on the streets of Los Angeles and eventually getting out. Her position as the only lesbian in the band is not skipped over either. Courtney Love, Eric Erlandson and Melissa Auf der Maur speak, and Kurt Cobain appears in the footage.
