What Hole in the Sky Is About
There is a roadside diner in Hokkaido. A young man works there. One day a woman turns up. Her boyfriend has left her by the road. She has nowhere to go. She stays there for a while. Something grows between the two of them. It goes well at first. In time something else shows itself. The man’s wish to possess her takes over. That wish puts the relationship under strain. The film does not tie the closing tone to one thing. It can be read as sad or as hopeful. Rinko Kikuchi and Susumu Terajima appear in the hundred and twenty seven minute film, a Japanese production Kazuyoshi Kumakiri finished in 2001.
