Hollow City

A group of children fleeing the war is brought to Luanda. A nun is travelling with them. When they come off the aeroplane, twelve year old N’Dala leaves the group. The boy wants to see the city on his own. From that moment the nun begins searching for him. N’Dala is carrying a cloth bag and a doll made of wire. He walks through streets full of people and traffic. Later he crosses to the island off the coast. There he meets an old fisherman called Antonio. The two of them become friends. Soon afterwards he runs into Zé, who is a little older than he is. The city starts to feel more forbidding to the boy. He would rather go back to the countryside he came from. Then he meets Joka, a man on the margins. Joka talks him into helping with a robbery for money. The film shows post war Angola through the walk of one child. João Roldan and Domingos Fernandes Fonseca appear in the ninety minute film, an Angolan and Portuguese co-production Maria João Ganga finished in 2004.
