Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco

An American family film. The family is going on holiday to Canada. Their three animals go with them: Shadow the old dog, Chance the young dog and Sassy the cat. The crates are being loaded at the airport. Chance gets out of his and the others follow; the plane leaves without them. The three are left in San Francisco. From there the film is about the effort to cross the city. The roads are crowded, the streets unknown and home is far away. They meet other animals on the way. A group of street dogs helps them, and Chance grows close to one of them. Two animal thieves are working at the same time, collecting dogs and selling them. The known feature of the narrative is that the animals talk. The speech was added afterwards; the animals in the image are real and actors gave the voices. The city scenes were shot on location: the tram line, the harbour, the hilly streets and the bridge. There is a fire in the last section and the animals help the fire brigade. Michael J. Fox, Sally Field and Ralph Waite are among the voices. David R. Ellis directed. It is the sequel to an earlier film. A pleasant choice for anyone who likes animal films to watch with children. For a viewer wanting a new narrative, the film repeats the structure of the first and differs little apart from the city setting.
