What How Old Are You Is About
Nirupama Rajeev is thirty-six, an upper division clerk in the revenue department, and has spent years parking her own ambitions somewhere out of sight. When her husband Rajeev, a radio announcer, is posted to Ireland, the cost of living there means the family can only follow if she finds work as well, and she is turned down on account of her age. A question her daughter puts to the President of India during a school visit sets something in motion, and an old classmate, Susan, who was the fierce one back in college, holds up a mirror. Manju Warrier returned to Malayalam cinema with this film after more than fourteen years away, and its release on 17 May 2014 became one of the year’s biggest successes, largely for what it says about how women are measured against their age.
