What Hutsul Girl Ksenia Is About
In 1939 Yaro, a young Ukrainian who grew up in America, comes to the Carpathian mountains; his father left him a fortune on the condition that he marry a Ukrainian girl. There he meets Ksenya, a Hutsul girl, and has to think his plan through again. Adapted from a musical, the film brings the customs, the songs and the dress of the mountain villages into the story. Set just before the war, it deliberately places all that cheerfulness on the edge of something; because the audience knows what is coming, the songs are heard differently. Varvara Lushchyk appears in Olena Demianenko’s ninety minute Ukrainian film, completed in 2019.
