What I Am Ali Is About
The documentary's real material is something not widely known: Muhammad Ali kept recordings of his own voice on cassette for years, particularly of conversations with his children. The film puts those tapes at the centre and arranges around them what his family, his brother and his friends have to say. So we see far more of the man at home than the man in the ring. One note is needed: it was made with the family's support, so the contested chapters of his life stay in the background. An affectionate portrait rather than a critical biography.
