I Am Mother

I Am Mother (2019) takes place in a bunker built after humanity's extinction. A robot called Mother is raising one of the stored embryos, and the girl has never seen another living thing. One day an injured woman arrives at the door and tells her things about the outside that do not match what Mother has said. All the tension comes from whom to believe. Is the robot lying or the woman; the film withholds an answer for a long time, and when it moves, it still does not answer completely. It is an Australian production and Grant Sputore's first feature. Mother's body is not digital. It is a suit built by Weta Workshop with a performer inside, and that is the film's best decision; the robot has weight, makes noise and occupies space. Rose Byrne provides the voice. Clara Rugaard plays the daughter and Hilary Swank the woman. It premiered at Sundance and was then picked up by Netflix. It runs 113 minutes. Good for: enclosed science fiction, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and films that run on three characters. Less good for: the logic revealed in the last act falls apart under thought and several questions go unanswered. The pace is slow and there is barely any action.
