Turbo Kid

An action film set after the end of the world, made in homage to the children's films of the 1980s. The year is 1997, but it is a 1997 imagined in the 1980s. The water is gone, there is no fuel, and people get around on bicycles. A boy called the Kid collects old comics and toys from a scrapyard. He meets a girl named Apple. She is strangely cheerful, insistent, and does not back off about being friends. The relationship between them is the best thing in the film. The region is run by a man named Zeus, who controls the water. The Kid stands up to him wearing an old hero costume he found in the scrap. The register is deliberately childlike; the violence is not. The fights are exaggerated and bloody, and that contrast is the whole idea. Music and image imitate the period completely: synthesiser score, VHS texture and handmade effects. Munro Chambers, Laurence Leboeuf and Michael Ironside are in the cast. It was made by a trio of Canadian directors. An enjoyable production for anyone who likes cult films and 1980s nostalgia. Before you watch, know this: the film holds nothing back on gore and should not be judged by its look.
