What I Live in Fear Is About
An elderly foundry owner is so frightened of nuclear war that he wants to move his whole family to Brazil. They refuse and petition the court to have him declared incompetent. The family-court mediator handling the case watches the obsession destroy the man's life, and cannot avoid the question underneath it: is never thinking about the bomb any saner? Kurosawa made the film ten years after Hiroshima and a year after a Bikini test poisoned a Japanese fishing crew. Toshiro Mifune, then thirty-five, plays a man of seventy, and the choice was argued over at the time too.
