What Bad Timing Is About

Vienna. A young American woman is brought into hospital after an overdose, and the same night her lover, the analyst Alex, is taken in for questioning. From there the film abandons chronology: the ambulance, the beginning of the affair, hotel rooms, the fights and the interrogation all fold into one another. Roeg arranges the fragments so that the audience understands what happened that night at the same moment the inspector does. The ending is still hard to sit through, and the film does nothing to soften it.
