Nicolas Roeg

Nicolas Roeg sat in the director's chair on his own for the first time on Walkabout; the AFI calls him a former cinematographer on that page, and he is the film's cinematographer too. The road to it goes back further: the Hollywood Reporter reported in November 1967 that Lee Loeb and Lee Irwin had written a screenplay from the novel and sold it to Denis O'Dell, who then lined Roeg up to direct. By a later interview with the producer Si Litvinoff, Roeg was at that point developing a screenplay for a small studio called National General. Lucien Roeg, who plays the boy in the film, was his son; by Litvinoff he had thought of his elder son Nico at first. The whole of it was shot in Australia.
