Jack Starks, a Gulf War veteran with amnesia, is committed to a psychiatric hospital for a murder he did not commit. The experimental treatment there is this: he is put in a straitjacket and shut inside a morgue drawer. Inside it he starts travelling fifteen years forward. John Maybury directed. The film draws on Jack London's 1915 novel The Star Rover. Adrien Brody plays Jack and Keira Knightley plays the adult Jackie, the little girl he met before he was locked up. George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh produced through Section Eight Productions. Massy Tadjedin wrote the screenplay, Peter Deming shot it and Brian Eno wrote the score. On a 28.5 million dollar budget it grossed 21.1 million worldwide. Reviews split. Rotten Tomatoes sits at 44 percent. Roger Ebert called it an exercise in early entrances, late exits and futile regrets. Who it is for: viewers who like time travel delivered through psychological thriller. Who it is not for: anyone who needs the rules to hold. The film's logic about time never settles, and that is what the criticism agrees on.
