I WeirDO

Liao Ming-Yi's 2020 Taiwanese film follows Po-Ching, who has severe obsessive compulsive disorder. He leaves the house once a month and touches everything with gloves; on one shopping trip he meets Chen Ching, who is in the same condition. The two begin living together and the arrangement they build works. The turning point is one of them recovering; the fit breaks, and the narrative shows that being well does not save the relationship. The film was shot entirely on a phone. The image is square in the first part; when the character's condition changes the frame widens, and that change becomes part of the narrative. Who it's for: those who like Taiwanese independent cinema and formal experiment. Who it's not for: viewers expecting mental illness treated realistically; the film uses it largely as an analogy.
