This 2011 Brazilian film, directed by Beto Brant with Renato Ciasca, is set in a small town in the Amazon. A travelling photographer begins an affair with a preacher's wife, and her past starts to threaten them both. The film does not build melodrama. The narrative holds desire and violence at the same level, showing the closed structure of the town, the gold prospectors and the religious congregation as parts of one economy. It is adapted from a novel. Camila Pitanga leads. The cinematography is humid and dark; the narrative delays its explanations and gives the characters' pasts in pieces. Who it's for: those who like Brazilian cinema and darkly pitched provincial drama. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with sexuality and violence shown explicitly.
