What Stray Dog Is About
In Porto Alegre the unemployed Ciro lives in a small flat with a nameless dog he found on the street; his parents support him, he translates from Russian now and then, and his days are all alike. When he meets Marcela, who wants to act and dreams of going elsewhere, the two attach themselves to each other at once and his life turns in a direction for the first time. But Marcela is diagnosed with lymphoma and has to leave the city for treatment; left behind, Ciro collapses and returns to his parents’ house. The eighty two minute Brazilian film by Beto Brant and Renato Ciasca was adapted from a novel and presents the illness not as a dramatic turn but as a fact that falls into the middle of a life. Júlio Andrade plays Ciro and Tainá Müller plays Marcela; it was completed in 2007.
