Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara

Gokul's 2013 Tamil film follows a young man avoiding work whose life crosses with that of a meticulous bank employee. One wants no responsibility at all, the other is overwhelmed by his boss's demands; both are stuck inside their own order. The structure runs on several lines. Stories proceeding separately are joined by coincidence; the narrative does not show those connections in advance and the humour comes from unexpected intersections. Vijay Sethupathi leads, in the period when his career was rising. Soori appears in support and carries part of the comic weight. The narrative scatters in the second half and some lines are not resolved. Who it's for: those who like Tamil black comedy and multi-strand narratives. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a tidy conclusion; the film leaves some stories unfinished.
