What I'll Find You Is About

Martha Coolidge's film draws on the stories of Polish musicians in the 1930s and 1940s. Robert, a Catholic opera singer, and Rachel, a Jewish violin virtuoso, are in love and dream of performing together one day at Carnegie Hall. The German invasion of Poland tears them apart. Robert swears to find her, and the search takes him on a dangerous journey through the middle of the war. The film keeps music at the centre of the narrative, with rehearsal, stage and concert sequences carrying the story. It uses the shape of melodrama openly and shows the horror of the period only as far as that shape allows. Stellan Skarsgård and Connie Nielsen are in the cast.
