What Ill Met by Moonlight Is About
Crete, 1944, under German occupation. Two British officers, Patrick Leigh Fermor and Billy Moss, work out a plan with the Cretan partisans: abduct General Kreipe, the German commander on the island, and get him to Egypt. The point is not a military gain but the humiliation of the occupiers. They take the general out of his car, and then have to walk him across the mountains for weeks. The entire garrison is behind them and the only places to hide are villagers' houses. The last film Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger made together, with Dirk Bogarde as Leigh Fermor. A hundred and four minutes. It happened: Kreipe was taken in April 1944, and an odd sort of respect formed between him and his captors, which the film shows too.
