What Illegal Is About
Tania has lived in Belgium without papers for eight years, together with her thirteen year old son Ivan. She is permanently on guard and dreads an identity check. One day she is caught and shut in a centre for people awaiting deportation, separated from her son. Before writing the film, Olivier Masset-Depasse spent a year investigating those centres with a journalist and a lawyer from the human rights league. Carried on Anne Coesens’ shoulders, it takes the argument about immigration out of the statistics and puts it in one mother’s body. It was Belgium’s Oscar submission.
