What Illusive Tracks Is About
December 1945, a train running from Stockholm to Berlin. The carriages hold people with nothing in common: a failed writer setting out to build a new life, a doctor planning to kill his wife somewhere along the way, a middle-aged couple, a soldier who boarded the wrong train, a conductor too furious to speak, and Baltic refugees being sent on to Germany in the company of two nuns. Peter Dalle shot it in black and white and runs broad slapstick down the same corridor as very dark humour. The war has just ended, Berlin is rubble, and the train is heading somewhere nobody actually wants to go. Under every laugh sits the question of how Sweden managed to stay out of all of it.
