What I'm Not Rappaport Is About
Nat Moyer is past eighty, a talker who invents a story for every situation and stirs up trouble constantly. On his bench in Central Park sits his companion Midge Carter, nearly blind and still working as the superintendent of an apartment building. When Midge is pushed toward retirement, Nat goes to war on his behalf, while also taking on his own daughter, a local dealer and a mugger. Herb Gardner adapted his own stage play and directed the film himself. Walter Matthau and Ossie Davis are the whole of it; their sparring on that bench runs almost like a vaudeville routine. It is about ageing, about becoming invisible, and about language being the last weapon a person has left.
