Cathryn, a children's author, retreats with her husband to a house in the Irish countryside. There the difference between what she sees and what is there disappears: her husband sometimes turns into her dead lover, the phone speaks in voices she does not know, and eventually her own double walks into the house. Robert Altman directed. Susannah York plays Cathryn. Altman conceived the project in the mid-sixties and only found financing in 1971, through the Hemdale Film Group. It was shot in County Wicklow, Ireland. One production detail stands out: York was pregnant during filming and wore loose clothing to conceal it. She won Best Actress at Cannes for the performance. John Williams's score, built with percussion by Stomu Yamashta, was nominated for an Academy Award. The reviews split. Roger Ebert gave three stars out of four and wrote that it inspires admiration rather than involvement. Pauline Kael called it a psychological thriller with no psychological content. It was released with almost no promotion in either Britain or the United States. It was later read as pointing toward Altman's 3 Women in 1977. Who it is for: viewers who like a mind coming apart told from inside, and Altman in his experimental phase. Who it is not for: anyone who needs to be told what is real. The film never clarifies it.
