What California Split Is About
Two men meet in an argument at a poker room and then cannot leave each other alone: Charlie lives to gamble and worries about nothing, Bill is a magazine writer who cannot stay at his desk and whose debts keep growing. They go to the track, to a fight, and finally to Reno. Altman is not telling a story about winning; he is looking at the emptiness that winning does not fill, and the last table says so plainly. The talk overlaps and nobody finishes a sentence; Altman deliberately pushed the sound recording here. Gould and Segal are effortless together.
