In Broad Daylight

Lawrence Kan's 2023 Hong Kong film follows Kay, a journalist who conceals her identity to get inside a care home for disabled residents and investigate abuse by staff. She confirms the allegations; but the real matter is not one institution being bad, it is a system of inspection that chooses not to see. The film draws on care home scandals that actually took place in Hong Kong. Its honest quality is weighing the consequences of journalism as well: the question of what happens to the residents after the story runs is not left aside. Jennifer Yu won best actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards for the role. Some scenes are very hard to watch. Who it's for: viewers interested in Hong Kong cinema and dramas built on journalism. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding content involving abuse of disabled people and sexual violence, or wanting a comforting conclusion.
