Rebel Ridge

Rebel Ridge (2024) is set in a small Louisiana town. Terry Richmond, a Marine veteran, rides in on a bicycle and is knocked to the ground by the police. The 36,000 dollars he is carrying is seized. It was bail money, and it is taken through civil asset forfeiture. No charge, no case, just the money gone. That legal mechanism is the subject. Civil forfeiture is a real practice in the United States, and the film puts it at the centre of an action picture; what Terry is up against is not a gang but a system operating lawfully. Jeremy Saulnier wrote and directed. His approach to violence is the same as in Blue Ruin and Green Room: short, clumsy, and consequential. The production was difficult. John Boyega left during filming in June 2021 for family reasons. Netflix also cited dissatisfaction with the script and accommodation, which Boyega denied. Aaron Pierre replaced him in October 2021 and shooting restarted on 25 April 2022 after roughly ten months. It went out on Netflix on 6 September 2024 and drew 31.2 million views in three days and 38.6 million the following week. It won the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie. It runs 131 minutes. Good for: stories about institutional corruption, restrained action, and Saulnier. Less good for: the pace is slow for an action film and much of it is legal procedure. The ending resolves far too personally for the systemic critique it built.
