In Heaven As It Is on Earth

A Russian woman is robbed just after crossing into Poland. Her money and her passport are gone, and she has to wait in the town until the thieves are caught. The man who decides how things go there is the priest, and he lodges her in the organist's house. The organist is unmarried. The town is small and everyone knows what everyone else is doing. The policemen make a show of looking for the thieves, the priest involves himself in everybody's business, and something nobody planned starts up between the woman and the organist. Jacek Bromski directs the Polish comedy; a hundred minutes, shot in the Podlasie region in the east of the country. It got sequels and the series stayed popular in Poland for years; the comedy comes out of laughing at small-town life on its own terms.
