What In the Absence of the Sun Is About
Lucky Kuswandi's 2014 Indonesian film follows three women through a single night in Jakarta. One has returned to the city after years and finds the life she left is no longer there; one is a young woman working without papers; one is ageing and looking for a place of her own. Their paths do not quite cross; the film runs them in parallel and makes the city the problem they share. Jakarta is not background here but a force acting on them: shopping malls, karaoke bars, traffic and businesses that never close. Kuswandi manufactures no large dramatic events, telling loneliness and class distance through everyday detail. It is one of the woman-centred works of Indonesian independent cinema. Who it's for: viewers who like slow Southeast Asian drama built on a city. Who it's not for: anyone wanting plot and a clear ending; the film finishes before morning arrives.
