What In the Mirror of Maya Deren Is About
Maya Deren was an avant-garde filmmaker who opened the way for American independent cinema in the forties, and she died in 1961 at forty-four. Martina Kudláček builds the documentary out of her life and the work she left, using rare archive material and passages from Meshes of the Afternoon, At Land and Ritual in Transfigured Time. Stan Brakhage, Jonas Mekas and Alexander Hammid, once her husband, are among those speaking. John Zorn’s score moves between her roots in Kiev and Haitian drums.
