What Inn of Evil Is About
In an Edo period Japan where any trade with the outside world is strictly forbidden, an isolated inn serves as the base of a smuggling operation. An idealist arrives wanting the stolen money in order to buy the freedom of the woman he loves, who has been forced to work in a brothel. Masaki Kobayashi's 1971 film works with waiting, rain and dark interiors far more than with swordplay, and when violence comes it is short and cold. Tatsuya Nakadai leads, late in his long partnership with the director. Kobayashi's standing subject is plain here: obedience against doing what is right.
