Inseparable Bros

Yook Sang-hyo's 2019 Korean film is about two men with no blood tie between them. Se-ha's body is paralysed but his mind is extremely sharp; Dong-gu has an intellectual disability but a strong body and a talent for swimming. They have lived twenty years in the same care home, each covering what the other lacks. When Dong-gu's mother, who left him years earlier, reappears and wants to exercise her rights as legal guardian, the threat of separation arrives. The film uses the familiar emotional shape of Korean family drama about disability, while also making visible how the care system and legal guardianship affect the decisions disabled adults are allowed to make. The ease between Shin Ha-kyun and Lee Kwang-soo carries it. It was drawn from a true story. Who it's for: viewers who like Korean family drama and stories built on friendship. Who it's not for: anyone wanting an approach that avoids emotional manipulation; the film is trying to make you cry.
