What Invalid Is About
Laco is a bad tempered handyman who loses everything to a gang and ends up in a wheelchair. As his life comes apart he meets Gabo, a young Roma man from the neighbourhood, who opens up an entirely different way of seeing things. What the two of them build together turns the film into a revenge story. Jonas Karasek's 2023 Slovak film is set in the criminal world of the nineties and sits between black comedy and satire. It treats Laco's disability as neither an object of pity nor a joke, taking it as a condition and building from there. Gabo is not a supporting figure either but one of the two people at the centre.
