Petre Gheorghiu What Ion: The Lust for the Land, the Lust for Love Is About
Ion is a young peasant and his hunger for land comes before everything. He does not marry Florica, the girl he loves, because she is poor; he marries Ana, who has land. At the moment he believes he has become master of his own field, he sees he has betrayed his heart. What he still wants is not his wife but Florica. Ana, from the way her husband treats her, is driven to despair and takes her own life. Ion is now both free and well off, and thinks Florica’s turn has come. But George, Florica’s husband, waylays him and kills him. The film builds the hunger for land and love as two faces of the same ruin. Running two hundred and five minutes, Mircea Mureșan’s Romanian film, with Şerban Ionescu and Ioana Crăciunescu, was completed in 1980.
