Betty works behind a counter in a large department store. Cyrus, the store's new owner, is young and rich. Betty sees him and makes her decision: this man is going to take me out. She has no money and no connections; she has one thing, her own confidence. One evening she cuts up a dress with scissors and sews it back together and goes where Cyrus goes. The plan works. Then a misunderstanding arrives; when Betty claims a friend's baby as her own, the people around Cyrus take her for somebody else entirely. Clarence G. Badger directs. Clara Bow plays Betty and Antonio Moreno plays Cyrus. It is an American production. The film was adapted from a story of the same name by Elinor Glyn, who had defined that word as self confidence and a magnetism that draws people. Glyn appears in the film as herself and explains to the audience what the quality is. The film made Clara Bow a star and she was known by that word ever after. Gary Cooper appears in a small uncredited part as a newspaper reporter. The matter it treats is climbing; the only capital Betty has is her own manner. The film does not leave the woman passive; every move is hers. The narrative runs in the shape of silent comedy and is built on a misunderstanding. The ending is predictable and keeps the romantic comedy bargain. Its limit is age; the silent pacing, the broad acting and the thin plot all show.
