A young tsar is crowned, meets the resistance of the boyars, and turns to steadily harsher methods to keep power. Sergei Eisenstein built it as opera rather than historical narrative: the gestures are extreme, the shadows swell on the walls, every frame is composed like a painting. The style looks artificial at first and is meant to. The authorities approved this first part and banned the second for questioning power, so the two belong together. Prokofiev's score was again designed with the images.
