What Ixcanul Is About
Maria, seventeen, lives with her family on a coffee plantation at the foot of a volcano in Guatemala and is about to be married to the farm's foreman. What she wants is the world on the other side of the mountain, and she takes up with a worker planning to leave for the United States; when he goes she is pregnant. The second half gets to the real subject: what happens when a woman who does not speak Spanish meets a hospital. Largely in Kaqchikel, with mostly non-professional actors. Ixcanul means volcano in that language.
