What Japanese Summer: Double Suicide Is About
A woman obsessed with sex, a suicidal man she meets in the street, and a would be gangster in love with guns end up trapped together in an underground hideaway. Nagisa Oshima's 1967 film is less a plot than an allegory: the desire for violence, the desire for death and sexual desire all mix in one confined space. The political tension of sixties Japan is never stated outright but stands behind every scene. Oshima breaks the rules of narrative on purpose and has no intention of letting the viewer settle. Not easy to watch, and a clear example of the period's radical strand.
