Jasminum

A monastery in a small town named after jasmine has its quiet order broken when Natasza, a restorer of paintings, arrives with her small daughter Eugenia. The monks who live there are known by the scents their bodies give off: Plum, Cherry, Birdcherry. Natasza works on an icon by day and by night tries to distil those smells into something else, while the story of the unhappy lovers buried beneath the building starts to surface. Jan Jakub Kolski tells all of it through the little girl, and never bothers to separate the miraculous from the joke. It belongs to the rural magic realist strain of Polish cinema, and it treats faith as something thoroughly human without ever mocking it.
