Jason Bourne

This is the fifth in the series and a direct sequel to Ultimatum from 2007; the fourth, The Bourne Legacy in 2012, was a side story built around Jeremy Renner without Matt Damon. The order matters, because Paul Greengrass picks up where Ultimatum stopped, not where Legacy did. Damon speaks remarkably little. Greengrass rang him after the edit was locked to say he had about twenty five lines in the whole thing, and Damon recalls an earlier note from Tony Gilroy warning him he would not be talking in this movie. The consequence is structural: almost all the explaining falls to desk scenes played by Alicia Vikander and Tommy Lee Jones. The Athens riot was not shot in Athens. Syntagma Square was rebuilt in Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife, and staged there, while the island airport served as both Reykjavik and Athens with changed signage and sound design. A 35 percent Canary Islands tax credit explains it. Las Vegas was shot in January 2016, and the Chinese credit comes from financing: Perfect World Pictures co funded it. A good fit if a lead with twenty five lines and exposition handed to desk scenes does not bother you. Not for anyone who treated the identity question as settled by Ultimatum; this one digs the same hole again through his father.
