Ocean's Thirteen

Steven Soderbergh’s 2007 film sends the crew after a casino owner who cheated one of their own. The plan is not to empty a vault: they rig the games so the house pays out on its opening night, so the measure is not what they carry out but what the house hands over in one night. Unlike the first film, none of it was shot in a working Las Vegas casino. The Bank was constructed on the largest sound stage at Warner Bros, with interiors by Philip Messina in reds and golds. Soderbergh explained the choice: “To film everything on practical locations in Vegas would have taken twice as long and, in order to get the shots that I wanted, I needed to completely control the environment.” He shot it himself as Peter Andrews and ran a long tracking move across the gaming floor. Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones did not come back, and the script says so out loud. It played out of competition at Cannes on 24 May 2007 and took 311 million dollars worldwide. For whoever is fine with the target being one night of payouts rather than a vault, and the room a Warner Bros build rather than real Vegas. Not for anyone hoping the couples from the first two films still have a story here.
