What King of the Hill Is About
St. Louis in the Depression. Aaron's mother is taken to a sanatorium with tuberculosis, his younger brother is sent to relatives, and his father, a travelling salesman, is away for longer and longer. That leaves a boy living alone in a room in a cheap residential hotel, waiting for the day the management seals his door over unpaid rent. He covers hunger with boasting at school and loneliness with invented stories. Soderbergh, adapting A. E. Hotchner's memoir, refuses pity and shows resourcefulness instead, then shows what produced it.
