Adapted from the New Zealand writer Janet Frame’s own account of her life, the film follows her across three periods: a childhood in a poor and crowded family, the eight years she spent in a psychiatric hospital after being misdiagnosed while training as a teacher, and her eventual emergence as a writer. She was given electroshock treatment repeatedly, and the operation scheduled for her was cancelled at the last moment when a book of hers won a prize. Jane Campion refuses both pity and heroism. Kerry Fox plays the adult Janet.
