Three citations in Independent Spirit's best director category stand to Steven Soderbergh, and only one is a win: sex, lies, and videotape in 1990, with The Limey, from 1999, and another of his films from 2006 both staying nominations. The last of the three is dated 2007. Benicio Del Toro, and not Soderbergh, takes the Berlinale's award in 2001, on the strength of his performance in Traffic.
