Joji

Joji is the youngest son of a wealthy family. He dropped out of engineering and sits at home. His father Panachel Kuttappan runs the order he built; the money is his, the decisions are his, and he treats all three sons the same way. Joji asks for money and the man refuses. Then the father has a stroke. The house changes at once: he is confined to bed, cannot speak, and nobody knows what to do. Joji sees an opening. When the man starts to recover the opening will close. Joji does something and then has to hide it. Dileesh Pothan directs; Syam Pushkaran wrote the screenplay. Fahadh Faasil plays Joji; Baburaj and Unnimaya Prasad are in the cast. The language is Malayalam. Fahadh Faasil is among the producers; it was made during the pandemic and released directly on a streaming platform. The narrative takes a cue from Shakespeare's Macbeth; it is not an adaptation but is built through structure and motif. The film does not hide the conditions of the pandemic; masks, restrictions and working from home are inside the narrative. The matter it treats is inheritance and masculinity; the order the father built goes on working after his death. Fahadh Faasil's performance is closed in and the character is justified nowhere. The sister in law played by Unnimaya Prasad is the narrative's second axis. Its limit is pace; the narrative is slow and an expectation of thriller is not met. Who it is for: viewers who like Malayalam cinema and psychological crime drama. Who it is not for: it is slow, the characters repellent, and the ending cold.
